The Math That Makes No Sense

Posted by: jackieodg86 on: September 25, 2008

I am currently enrolled in a class called Structures of Mathematics and it has got to be the weirdest math course I have ever encountered. I’ve come to assume that it is math that we will eventually be expected to teach elementary level children because it is a requirement of elementary education majors AND the title of the course book is Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, BUT someone needs to explain to me how am I supposed to teach kids something that even I don’t understand. My room mate is a physics major and even she doesn’t understand the homework that I have half the time, so every monday and wednesday I sign onto AIM and talk to be close friend who happens to loooove math and apparently has no problem helping me in all my unfortunate glory with my math homework. Thankfully he comes before I have class and checks it for me.

To continue on why I can’t stand this class, I have determined that what she is teaching us in the class is not something that you learn in elementary school unless you are an elementary super genius or apparently that german guy , Grauss. I have no real comprehension behind why I need to know any of this and further more, what elementary school child knows how to solve the equation (n+2)^2… I mean seriously. I don’t get it. I really don’t. Not cool at all.

I actually had that class either a year or year and a half ago. I thought it was quite weird myself and I wasn’t a big fan. In my observations this past year in young grade levels I found that it is used in the classroom. Children are literally taught math backwards anymore which is believed to be more effective. It makes our job as future teachers harder as we will have to attend workshops to learn these new ways to teach our future students. Everyday mathematics is used in most school as their math curriculum and I now feel like I have to re learn math because I will have to teach it a different way than I was taught! Boooooo
